Tetsuko vs Medusa cover/concept

Description

I hope Pumpmonger won't mind what I'm about to do:

I want to share a little bit (without too many spoilers) of the collaborative process between Nick and me. This particular idea for a story–which I think we're all but decided we will do–came about when Nick wrote this:

Tetsuko is ultra-strong and ultra-tough. Now imagine a story where she is a total damsel [in distress] and Red has to save her.</span>

How this would work is Tetsuko is confronted with something she is completely afraid of. Her strength does not matter because this is a primal terror. I don't know if she has [faced] anything like this.

Helpless she is doomed but Red breaks in and defeats the threat and lifts Tetsuko in her arms comforting her.

"For all her strength she is still so young." Red thinks. "I need to protect her until she is ready."

Just a stupid sexy idea to let Tetsuko get to be a damsel before she goes total hero.
To which I replied:

Like the idea. I’ll be eager to see your suggestions about what could make Tetsuko so helpless.

That is a very good question.</div>

I want it to be real so Red has to fight to rescue her, otherwise it could be an illusion of some deep fear.

Agreed. Red wouldn't be able to rescue Tetsuko from an illusory "danger", nor would an illusion likely be deadly to her. (Possible, I suppose, but not likely.)

Imagine this, Tetsuko trapped in the lair of Medusa. She quickly realizes her peril and blindfolds herself but now she is helpless to see and has limited fight training.
Medusa's laws rake her skin, cutting deep and she is trapped in the crushing coils of the snake half of her body. As a monster she is stronger than most enemies Tetsuko has faced and her claws are poisonous. Tetsuko fights valiantly but she is outclassed at this stage of her training.

Medusa all the while is whispering lies into her ear, about how her friends are dead, how she is all alone, what a lovely statue she will make. Tetsuko breaks free of the coils only to be tripped and embraced again. Over and over in a cat and mouse struggle. She attacks empty air. Medusa' last attack is from above, her tail around Tetsuko's neck strangling her and lifting off the floor.

I love it!

I was going to suggest some sort of monster, something that didn't exist in Tetsuko's world of "science" and "rationality". She's seen just enough uncanny things (like giant [spoiler!]) that her confidence in her ability to face and conquer the perils of Red's world is beginning to weaken.

Medusa would be a great monster for her to face; she's read about it in her high-school and college classes, and she's seen Clash of the Titans (and was creeped out by the on-screen Medusa), so she thinks she knows what she's up against - until she actually has to confront one. Blindfolding herself puts her at a very distinct disadvantage. Maybe there are even pits and chasms that she's in danger of falling into because she can't see them... and maybe at some point Medusa whips Tetsuko's blindfold off, so that she has to concentrate on keeping her eyes closed? Difficult to do when you want to watch your step lest you plunge into an abyss...

And the psychological poison Medusa is feeding her preys on her as well.

Giving Medusa some sort of magic that allows her claws to penetrate Tetsuko's skin is a nice touch; the poison could also have the effect of weakening Tetsuko as the fight progresses, so that at the end when the Medusa's tail begins strangling her, she's too weak to be able to pull the coils off of her neck. The danger of suffocation is the deadly peril Red must rescue Tetsuko from (more than the poison, which Tetsuko's system could shortly neutralize, or one of Sonya's medicinal-herb concoctions could heal her from).

Well done! Unless you can come up with something even better, let's go with this. (I'll be thinking on it as well, but this is going to be hard to top.)

I am glad you liked the idea. It seemed that being turned to stone would cause some terror in Tetsuko. Ideas, I think the Medusa should not be ugly but incredibly beautiful with a muscled torso as big as Tetsuko or Red. She is still half snake with snakes for hair. I could see her hating Tetsuko all the more for being so big and beautiful.

[I also had the idea that looking at Medusa, say from the back, isn't necessarily dangerous... as long as you don't make eye contact!]

So I worked up a (really) rough sketch of the climactic scene, with Tetsuko dangling weak and helpless in Medusa's coils, as the monster's tail slowly strangles her to death; while all this time whissssspering, ""There issss a way to eassse your disssstressss, Tetssssuko. Ssssimply open your eyessss... open your eyessss..."

And when I finished the sketch, I thought it'd make a cool cover as well, so I slapped a logo and a title/blurb "The Coils of Medusa!" on it.
